In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the Top 5 Most Popular Dog Breeds in America. From size to temperament to activity levels and health considerations, if you’re thinking of getting a dog, you’ll want to read this post before making a decision.

Smart, loyal and friendly. America’s favorite dogs are all these things and more, so how do you know which breed is perfect for you? It’s important to drill down into the defining characteristics of each breed before making a decision on which is the right one for you.

Just as every pet is unique, so is every household. Some homes are bustling with activity, children or even other pets, while others are subdued and quiet.

Choosing a dog that fits your lifestyle, activity level and preferences in terms of size and time-commitment is important to a successful pet adoption.

Big Dog Breeds Still Highly Sought

No. 5: Poodle is popular for its variety of sizes.

The Poodle is one of the most intelligent dog breeds and are known for being clever, full of personality and very social. Like the other dog breeds mentioned in this post, they need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation to keep them happy.

One of the most desirable features of this breed is that they come in several sizes from standard to miniature and even toy size – making them a breed that can flex to any household and size requirements you may have.  Because they are so friendly, they tend to do well with other pets, children and even strangers. If you already have an established pet in the home and are looking to add another, a Poodle may be a good choice for a smoother introduction and transition.

It’s important to note that Poodles do need a lot of personal care compared to other breeds. Their high-maintenance fur needs to be brushed every other day and they will need frequent trips to the groomers for a professional trim to avoid matting.

Poodles are prone to Gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV disease) and a variety of vision issues as well.

No. 4: German Shepherd More Than Just a Working Dog.

These highly intelligent working dogs are extremely devoted, loving companions. Because Shepherds are so smart and energetic, they tend to get bored more easily than other breeds. To keep all that energy from turning into destructive behaviors, you’ll want to keep them stimulated through regular, daily exercise, training activities, chewy and puzzle toys.

If you’re looking for a loyal, protective companion who enjoys learning new “jobs”, the German Shepherd is a great family dog.

Shepherds are prone to certain health issues, including hip dysplasia, GDV and other ailments.

No. 3: Golden Retriever Adored for its Sweet, Intelligent Nature.

Like their Lab counterparts, Goldens are gentle, sweet, and intelligent family dogs. They also require a fair amount of exercise daily. The American Kennel Club recommends up to two hours of daily activity, and training exercises are needed to keep these high-energy dogs mentally stimulated and healthy.

Their long, thick coat will also require more care. Goldens are high shedders, so it is recommended that you brush them daily, regardless of the season.

Like the Labrador, Goldens are prone to hip dysplasia and other joint injuries because of their active lifestyle.

No. 2: Labrador Retriever Still the Perfect Family Dog.

Labrador Retrievers have long been revered as the perfect family dog. Their eager-to-please nature makes them easy to train, and their intelligence and gentle manner make them suitable for any living situation from apartments and condos to homesteads on multiple acres.

They have a lot of energy and love to play, and because they are such intelligent dogs, they need mental stimulation. The perfect home for a Lab is one that can dedicate a lot of time to exercise, training and toys that make them use their minds like puzzle feeders.

Because Labs have a thick, double coat, they are prone to shedding. If you’re considering a Labrador, they will require weekly brushings to maintain a healthy coat and daily brushings during peak shedding times like the spring.

French Bulldog Leads Top 5 Most Popular Dog Breeds in America.

According to the American Kennel Club, in 2024 the French Bulldog surpassed the Golden Retriever as America’s favorite dog breed – ending the Golden’s 31-year reign as America’s most loved dog breed.

Frenchies are feisty, affectionate, and playful dogs – full of personality and very social. Their charming manner and appearance are reasons why they have grown in popularity over the years. They don’t shed much and are a relatively quiet breed, making them a great canine companion for anyone living in a small space.

Additionally, they don’t require a huge commitment in terms of daily playtime or exercise; however, they do come with some health issues common to the breed that are worth noting. Frenchies are a brachycephalic breed. Because their faces are flat, they may have difficulties breathing so, you’ll need to pay special attention when they are exerting themselves during play.
