responsible pet ownership

It’s that time of year when summer storms, and fireworks celebrations are top of mind for many dog owners.  If managing your dog’s anxiety during fireworks season is a top priority this summer, we have some helpful tips for you in this blog post.

Pets thrive on routine and predictability. They feel most secure when they know what to expect from their daily lives, but when a storm rolls in or when summer holidays are accompanied by fireworks, the sudden loud noise can be a source of stress for many dogs.

When a dog is scared and anxious, it often leads to behavioral problems such as excessive barking, whinning, accidents in the home or even destructive behavior. This post focuses on three key things you can do to help ease your dog’s anxiety during loud celebrations and summer weather events. We’ll also touch on when a customized approach to care may be needed.

Give Them a Safe Space

One of the simplest and most helpful tips for managing your dog’s anxiety during storms or fireworks displays is to provide them with a safe space – a place they can retreat to whenever they become stressed.

A great way to keep your pets safe and happy during loud events is to designate a small, quiet and secure space in your home where they can go if they feel overwhelmed. Ideally, this space could be in a closet or kennel and in an area away from windows – especially if your dog is sensitive to the flash of lights from lightning or fireworks.

The familiar scent of bedding, an article of clothing with your scent on it, or a favorite toy can make them feel more at ease in their temporary retreat.

Managing Your Dog’s Anxiety With Pheromone Therapy and Anti-anxiety Medications

Pheromone Therapy

Like cats, pheromone therapy can be used to calm dogs during loud events like fireworks or thunderstorms.  Pheromone therapy for dogs offers a non-invasive and often effective way to manage stress and anxiety associated with loud noises and the destructive behaviors dogs often exhibit when under extreme stress.

While pheromone therapy may not work for every dog or in every situation, it can help create a more comfortable environment for your canine companion. Factors including age, past experience and your pup’s individual temperament can influence how much relief is gained by the use of pheromone therapy. In severe cases of anxiety or aggression, consulting your veterinarian on the use of prescription treatments may be needed in addition to treating with pheromones.

We recommend scheduling a consult with your veterinarian to determine if pheromone products are a suitable option for your pet.

 Anti-anxiety medication

As with any medication, it’s best to consult with your veterinarian on a safe course of therapy for your pet. This is also the case when seeking a prescription for anti-anxiety medication prior to a major event or fireworks holiday.  This will ensure you have time to schedule a visit and get a prescription filled or available on standby in the event you need it.

Work With a Dog Trainer

Teaching an older dog not to fear loud noises such as thunder or fireworks can be a challenge, but it is possible, especially with the help of a reputable trainer. This training is especially effective when you have a young puppy. This is the best time to enlist a trainer to work with them to lessen anxious behaviors and incentivize wanted coping behaviors instead.

For example, one technique you can use to desensitize your dog to the sound of fireworks and thunder is to play recordings of these events so they get used to them. Start by playing a recording of a storm or fireworks display on low volume and for a short period of time.  Gradually increase the volume and length of time of the recording and gradually increase exposure as your pup’s tolerance increases.  If they are handling the sound well, try reinforcing their good behavior with a treat.

Some dogs are more sensitive to sounds than others and may never get used to loud noises.  However, for dogs who are exposed at an early age, this can be a very effective tool for managing stress levels.
