July 31 is National Mutt Day! Occurring twice a year in July and again in December, it’s a day to embrace and celebrate dogs of multiple and mixed breeds. Mixed breed dogs live in shelters all across the country waiting to be adopted into a loving home. National Mutt Day is the perfect day for dog lovers looking to add a new member to their family or get involved at their local animal shelter.

The term “mutt” is sometimes wrongfully regarded as negative. For this reason, many mixed breed dogs are often passed up for adoption in favor of purebred dogs. However, these dogs love, learn and behave just the same as purebreds. Although you might not be able to pick out the exact breeds they stem from, their wonderful and distinct features can add uniqueness to your life. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind pet, a mixed breed dog is the way to go.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million new dogs arrive at animal shelters each year. Although they might be from different breeds, these abandoned and sometimes abused dogs share one thing in common: the need for a forever home. If you have the resources, time and love in your heart, think about adopting a mixed breed dog into your family on National Mutt Day. For those unable to adopt, consider volunteering at your local animal shelter. A few hours of you love and time can make a big difference in these animals’ lives. Spread the word on social media with the hashtag NationalMuttDay and encourage others to get involved. If you already have a mixed breed dog as a member of your family, show them a little extra love today. Learn more at www.nationalmuttday.com.
